Gerti reports:
I went to check the male blossom today–the first one to appear on Hercules–with the intention of capturing the moment for eternity, as any proud parent does when their little one is growing up. However, by the time I got to it later today, it had already finished blossoming. It was a sad little downward-facing softy when I saw it. So beware as you plan your pollinations–there is not much time! But I fear not since I spotted many more males and even a couple of females. This is assuming that I am already at a stage where I can differentiate between males and females. Please look at the photos and correct me if I am wrong!
What I actually wanted to warn you about is something else I noticed on Hercules. After this discovery and the rapid growth I have nicknamed Hercules, "Sauvage". I resorted to the french version of savage because for some reason "Sauvage" seems more appropriate and the pronunciation is, well, more sexy. But THIS (pic below) is what I saw - little needles...Plant handlers with pets or babies around, be careful!
Yes Gerti, I think you have identified the blossoms correctly! Now go forth and pollinate your Wild Hercules but remember to wear gloves to protect yourself from the spikes!
